Keep Pearls Radiant: Simple Care Tips

Tips to keep your Pearls looking luminous.

Tips on cleaning and caring for pearl jewellery

Taking care of pearls requires attention to detail and gentle handling to maintain their lustre and integrity. Here’s a summary of the cleaning and caring instructions for pearls:

Regular Cleaning and Care of Pearl Jewellery

  1. Wipe After Each Use: Gently wipe each pearl and the silk strand after each use with a dedicated jewellery cloth or soft fabric to remove oils and debris. Avoid pulling on the thread to prevent stretching.
  2. Inspect Regularly: Check the integrity of the silk thread and knots during each cleaning session to prevent sudden breakage.
  3. Avoid Harsh Methods: Never use abrasive tools like toothbrushes or ultrasonic cleaners, nor harsh fabrics or commercial cleaners that contain ammonia, as they can damage pearls.
  4. Extra Cleaning: Occasionally, use a mild soap without fragrance or additives to clean pearls after heavy or prolonged wear. Wipe with a damp cloth to remove any residue and air-dry thoroughly on a soft cloth before storing.
  5. Clasp Cleaning: Clean the clasp with a jewellery cleaner suitable for the metal, avoiding contact with the pearls to prevent damage.

Due to the softness of Pearls, they are generally threaded onto silk. If that silk stretches or loosens, it may break suddenly. Inspect the integrity of the thread and knots during each cleaning session.

Storage:

  1. Soft Lined Box or Pouch: Store your pearl necklace lying down in a soft-lined box or pouch to prevent silk thread stretching.
  2. Protect From Damage: Shield pearls from sharp blows, scratching, sunlight, and extreme temperatures. Store them separately from other jewellery to prevent scratching.
  3. Avoid Airtight Containers: Do not store pearls in airtight containers or plastic pouches, as they need air and moisture to maintain their nacre and prevent drying out and cracking.
  4. Avoid Contact with Chemicals: Perfume, hairspray, and makeup can deteriorate pearls, so wait until such products have dried before wearing your pearls.

By following these guidelines, you can help ensure that your pearls remain luminous and beautiful for years to come.
