Cherished Memories: The Sentimental Value of Jewellery

Preserving Memories: Jewellery Repair and Remodelling Services

In a fast-paced world filled with fleeting trends and disposable goods, there are possessions that transcend their material value. Jewellery has a unique ability to capture memories and emotions becoming cherished keepsakes that hold a special place in our hearts.

Restoring Sentimental Value, One Piece at a Time

Take a moment to stroll down memory lane, and revisit the significance of certain pieces in your collection. Maybe a necklace gifted by a loved one or a bracelet purchased during a memorable trip. Perhaps a handmade creation from a child’s imagination.

One such memory is a bright orange and green pasta necklace my son made at pre-school for Mother’s Day. I no longer have this necklace but it makes me smile whenever I think of it.

Often more sentimental than valuable they pieces are tangible reminders of cherished moments and beloved individuals. They speak to the bonds we share and the experiences that shape us.

Quality You Can Trust

As a jewellery artisan, I understand the profound significance these pieces hold. That’s why I offer a range of services aimed at preserving and enhancing the memories they hold.

From minor repairs to complete makeovers or remodelling, I’m here to breathe new life into your treasured pieces. Whether it’s replacing a lost bead, repairing a broken clasp, or transforming a sole earring into a pendant. No task is too small when it comes to preserving your precious memories.

One of the most rewarding aspects of my work is hearing the stories behind each piece of jewellery. Like the customer who vividly recalled the sights, sounds, and scents of a special holiday while wearing a beaded necklace purchased during their travels. It’s moments like these that highlight the profound connection between jewellery and memory.

Jewels and Gems: Precious or Semi Precious

Celebrate Jewels, Jewellery and Jewellers

Jewel Day - A bead is a small item with at least one hole in it for stringing. Beads can be made from many different things including metals, wood, shell, bone, glass, ceramic and gemstones.

Jewellery: Its not all Jewels, Gemstones and Precious Metals

Since pre-historic times people have adorned themselves with jewellery. Eagle talons may have been used as jewellery in Croatia around 135,000 years ago. At a site in Israel researches found beads made from the sea snail. These are the first known jewellery made by modern humans dated as early as 110,000 years. Similar beads were found in Morocco and South Africa while ostrich shell beads from Kenya and a Stone bracelet in Siberia appear to be around 40000 years old.

Although, during the last century in the western hemisphere at least, woman have worn most of the jewellery, throughout history men have worn great quantities of beads and ornaments to emphasize masculinity, virility and wealth

Precious Gems, Semi-Precious Stones: Which are What?

Diamond, Ruby, Blue Sapphire and Emerald are considered precious but there are rarer semi-precious stones. An example, Jadeite can fetch higher prices for the same weight in either Gold or Diamonds.

5 Tips on How To Celebrate Jewel Day

Jewellery makes fabulous gifts: Brighten up the day with beautiful bling

  • Share some jewellery – today is the day to gift a special piece of jewellery to yourself or someone you love. Jewels light up people’s lives instantly and make everyone feel special.

Heirloom or Simply Sentimental: Appreciate the thought behind the piece

  • Honour a sentimental family piece – bring it out of the jewellery box and give it the attention it deserves! Today is a day to appreciate beautiful works of art.

Protect your Investment: A little TLC will stop a lot of tears

  • Care for your jewellery – check settings, clasps and threads for wear or damage. Clean beads, gemstones, jewels and other jewellery components and store appropriately.

Give it the love it deserves: Repair or Remodel your favourite Jewellery

  • Oops, found some damage or wear on your favourite piece. Clasp, thread, elastic, ear-wires are all elements which can be repaired or replaced. Ring resizing, gold or silversmith work should be carried out by a local trusted Jeweller.

Support your favourite jeweller: Share customer reviews and personal recommendations

  • Appreciate your favourite jeweller – today is as much about the creators of beautiful pieces as it is about the jewellery itself. Order a bespoke creation, appreciate the art and craftsmanship and celebrate your uniqueness.

Sustainability & the Environment

Reduce Waste, Conserve Energy: Embrace Circular Economy

beehive-chickens-fruit-trees-garden promote Sustainability & support the Environment

A positive boost to sustainability and the environment! March, 2024 saw the second phase of WA’s Plan for Plastics coming into effect on Friday 1st, with a ban on single-use, non-compostable coffee cups and unlidded food trays. More plastic items are scheduled in the Plan from September 1st 2024 and consumers are encouraged to take their own take-away cups, water bottles, food containers and cutlery.

Protect the Environment: Promote Sustainability

When you purchase and item from MaxineFaye Handcrafted Beaded Jewellery, much of the packaging may consist of reused wrapping paper, recycled boxes, or padded mailing bags, both to keep down the costs and to reduce waste. It may not make for an Instagram worthy unboxing experience, but stops waste at the source and helps improve sustainability and the environment through Circular Economy

New packaging materials used at MaxineFaye handcrafted Jewellery are eco-friendly, sustainable, home compostable, plant-based, recyclable, and plastic free.

Protect the Environment: Promote Sustainability

Put your R’s on the Line: There is no Plan(et) B

  • REDUCE consumption of materials
    • REFUSE – do I really need it, can I borrow it
    • RE-GIFT – donate to a charity, join a community gifting group
  • REUSE – use a keep-cup, take your own shopping bag, water bottle, cutlery
    • REPAIR – can it be repaired, join a local Repair Café
    • REPURPOSE – can it be remodelled, what do I have that can be used instead?
  • RECYCLE/UPCYCLE– visit your local Council for where/when/how to recycle specific items
    • batteries, paints, chemicals, white-goods, computer, and printers
    • ROT – food scraps and suitable garden waste
      • Add to the compost bin, or worm farm/worm tower
      • start a no-dig lasagne or hügelkultur garden bed,
      • feed it to the chickens

Chooks are a lot of fun and a great way to recycle food scraps

The back garden follows a general permaculture / no dig practice. Vegetables and herbs which benefit from shade sit under fruit trees and shrubs, while the heat loving plants find their spots on the edges of the gardens.  The garden environment isn’t always tidy (who am I kidding – it is seldom tidy) but the birds, bees, bugs and butterflies seem to enjoy it.

The chooks haven’t read the “no dig” agreement though!  They dispose of kitchen waste and reward us with eggs, so are forgiven.  When they eventually stop laying, they enjoy their retirement foraging around the back yard, until it’s time for them to go to the great chicken run in the sky.  Then they are buried and become compost for the next generation of garden plants.

I could never eat them…in fact years ago I bought a frozen free-range chicken to cook for dinner but the thought of it made me so sad that I buried it out the back (uncooked) and dinner wasn’t what the family had expected.

Recycling other organic materials support the Environment

The chooks share their run with a couple of compost tumblers, a worm tower and a worm farm. Anything the chooks don’t eat can be added to one of these. The reward for a little effort is less waste sent to landfill, and rich compost to add to the garden beds and improve the environment.

Bee Hive and Insect Hotels

Hubby had a Flow® Hive and it was amazing to watch the different coloured honey being harvested from adjoining cells. This depended on what plants were in bloom when the bees were out collecting pollen. Unfortunately, after he had a severe allergic reaction to a sting, and even with the EpiPen® I wasn’t comfortable having him work in their environment.  The hive has now been added to our daughter’s Apiary.

He has two insect hotels in the front yard for the local bugs and native bees.  These aren’t for honey, but to encourage the predatory insects to stay in the garden, protect it from pests and pollinate the plants.

What are your hints and tips on sustainability and way to reduce consumption of materials.

Bespoke Creations

Bringing your ideas to life

With the aid of internet technology you can design the perfect bespoke piece from anywhere in Australia.

This customer was interested in a turtle charm bracelet I had posted on my social media pages.  As it had already been sold I showed them other turtle charms and beads I had in stock. They fell in love with the Paua shell and Sterling Silver style in this photo.

Years ago they had a favourite necklace in little blue and white beads. They wanted to replicate it and add the turtle charms.

A selection of colours within the customers bespoke brief

Customer Briefing

Discuss colours, style and other design ideas

During our conversations the customer advised me of the colours and style of beads or look they liked. The length of the piece and other things relevant to the design.

With this information I shared photos of beads and materials I had in stock. I added other beads that picked out the colours in the Paua shell. The customer developed the mixes they were most interested in.

Trialling Patterns

It’s time to get into the pattern design phase.

This is where I make up several “dummy” strands in different patterns using the bead mixes the customer has selected. Once I have a few of these samples made I send more photos.  From this process the customer can tell me the elements they like or dislike.

A few little tweaks and another set of bespoke “dummies” are sent across the internet. Sometimes I may send a design out of “left field” just as an idea to develop on.

The Finished Product

Ready to send anywhere in Australia

This pretty set comprises of matching necklace and bracelet, both with extension chain. The sizing to be adjusted as needs be or they can be joined together to form a longer necklace.

The Paua turtle charms can be added or removed easily. As a bonus they can be threaded on large sleepers for earrings or added to a different necklace.

Bespoke or custom-made jewellery make lovely gift ideas and are perfect for that special occasion.

Jewellery Jargon: Clasp Styles

Clasp Styles used in Beaded Jewellery

In beadwork and jewellery making there are some words that may be confusing in descriptions or statements.  This post will help you understand what the clasp styles are and how I use them in my designs.  You may also find the post on jewellery findings interesting.

Parrot or Lobster Clasp

Natural Beauty necklace with a lobster style clasp @MaxineFaye Handcrafted Jewellery waxed cord assorted wood beads

The most common clasp style is probably the parrot or lobster clasp.  They look like a parrot beak or lobster claw holding onto a ring from the opposite side of the piece.  This style is very functional, generally sit discreetly in the design. It can be used with an extension chain to enable the piece to be lengthened if required.  They may be difficult for people with restricted motor skills (arthritis, tremors etc) to use by themselves.

Spring Ring Clasp

Spring ring clasp on spiral stitched beaded bracelet

These work similar to the parrot clasp but are a circular shape.  The latch springs back inside the circle to keep the piece secure.  This clasp is quite inconspicuous when used with chain designs as its appearance can resemble the links.

Toggle Clasp

A toggle clasp is often a little easier to use.  They consist of an open ring through which a bar passes and sits across the opening.  The ring can be a simple small smooth circle or come in many shapes, sizes and some are very ornate.  The larger ornate ones are great as a feature on a the front of a necklace or bracelet. The smaller ones would be more comfortable at the back of the neck.

Screw Clasp

Both sides of this clasp have a threaded section and to fasten they are screwed together.  They are mainly spherical, tube or barrel in shape and can be quite simple, patterned or embellished in crystals.  This style and the Magnetic Clasp below can look very similar when in the closed position.

Magnetic Clasp

Magnetic heart clasp stye on dyed Magnesite bracelet

Positive and negative magnets make up each side of these clasps and when brought together the magnetic properties create the clasp.  The strength of the magnet will determine what item they are appropriate for. Only the very strong ones suitable for bracelets or many necklace styles.

This style of clasp can be found in many shapes including hearts, flowers, spherical, tube and barrel.  Some have a fold over style where there is a hinge between both sections of the magnet which folds over the other section of the clasp.  Some of this style can be very ornate.

Magnetic clasps are not recommended for people with pacemakers or other similar devices.

Tab Style Clasp

ab clasp style finished with a faux pearl

The receiving section of this clasp can come in many styles and shapes including flowers, gem or crystal encrusted.  This side of the clasp has a internal hollow section to accept the opposite side of the clasp.  This clasp is sometimes called a box or ball clasp  The other side of the clasp is made of a folded “spring”.  To open or close the clasp the Tab spring is pressed together and inserted into the hollow section.  Once in place the spring is released and the clasp is caught.

Some of this style include a bar across the opening of the hole.  This acts as a safety catch to lessen the chance of you loosing the piece if it should get caught or pulled. In the top right picture above, both clasps are open, but caught on a safety bar.

Fish Hook Clasp

This style of clasp is generally an oval or marquee shape and may be filigree, textured or encrusted with marcasite,  stones or crystals.  The mechanism of this clasp is similar to the ball / box clasp in that one section of the clasp is inserted into the other under tension.

The fish hook section is looped over the bar at the entry to the opening and then pushed into place.  The little cutout at the end of the hook locks the clasp into place.  To remove the clasp the ends are pressed together to release the hook which is then slide out and unlooped from the entrance bar.

In the above picture you can see how this entrance bar acts like a safety catch and how this clasp gets its name.

Hook & Eye Clasp Styles

At its very basic design this style is a simple hook on one side of the clasp which catches into a ring connector (the eye) on the other and gravity keeps the piece in place.  In some styles the hook is shaped like the letter S and has rings on either end which are worked into the beaded design.  Each end of the S connects to one of the rings.  Generally one of the tails of the S sits a little firmer on the ring while the other one moves on and off with ease.

This style can be very ornate and look like the tails of animals or dragonflies or vines and flowers entwined with each other.  The can even look like ropes or ribbons.  The eye may be in the form of a fish which is caught on the hook or even the head of an animal with its tail used as the hook.  There are some self closing forms of this style which may have animal heads biting onto each side of a central ring.  Some of these styles may include a hinged safety latch which folds over the top of the S and connects one side to the other.

Slide Lock Clasp

With this style of clasp, both sides look nearly identical to each other as cylindrical tubes each with an open end and a caped end.  On closer inspection one tube has a slightly larger diameter and it has a slit cut from one end to the other.  The other tube has a tension spring which when slid inside the larger tube catches to form the clasp.

This style may come with individual rings attached to the outside for single strands or be longer and include many rings for multi strands.  They are also found with one long section like a buckle instead of rings for attaching ribbon or leather.

Button Clasp

There are two individual styles under this name.

One is the common button, similar to those on our clothing.  A buttonhole in the design, a ring of beads or fibres can pass over the button to form the clasp.

The other style that falls under this name has two sections. Each with their own ring for attaching to the design.  The knob like feature presses into the hole similar to a press-stud.

Other Clasp Styles

There are other clasp styles, but they generally have a similar way of operating as the styles listed above

Adjustable slide, tie and macrame style knots are great options for anyone with an allergy to metals. Stretch style bracelets and longer style necklaces that can be popped over your head don’t need clasp. They can be worn by anyone, especially those with limited dexterity. These styles can also suit metal free options.

Contact me If you would like a particular clasp style added to a custom order. Reach out if a piece currently listed may be altered to make it more wearable for your particular need.

Beautiful and Exclusive Jewellery

Are you looking for beautiful beaded jewellery which has been designed and crafted

Nature is inspiration for MaxineFaye original, OOAK handcrafted beaded jewellery

A Source of Inspiration

I design and handcraft my original pieces at my home studio adjacent to the beautiful bush and wetlands of Bibra Lake Nature Reserve, part of the much larger Beeliar Wetlands system.  The colours and textures of our wonderful Australian landscapes provide loads of inspiration for my designs as do the beads themselves.

Quality Techniques

I use quality finishing techniques such as wire guardians to protect clasps and threads and crimp covers to offer a professional look, but also to reduce the sharp edges that a regular pressed crimp may offer.

Pearls and softer gemstones are generally knotted onto silk or cord to provide a buffer between each bead which protects them from wear and tear.

Visit the website to view some of the lovely things people say about my designs and services.

My Guarantee

Delighting customers and building a base of trust are priorities of my business, therefore I offer efficient service, well-crafted designs and a 12-month guarantee on all original designs and repairs or remodelling.  This enables you to relax and buy from me with confidence.

2nd Place – Theme (Scarecrow) – Perth Royal Show

To honour the Year of the Farmer, the theme for this competition was “Scarecrow”.

Wanting to do something out of the box, I consequently came up with this design and hence called her Ceres.  Which I thought was especially relevant as she was the Goddess of sowing and reaping.

Wire wrapping classes are a fun and relaxed way to learn a new skill.  You are welcome to bring your own beads and learn to make your very own beaded bug, butterfly, dragonfly (or your own crazy bug) and use it as a suncatcher, ornament, plant decoration or even a brooch.

The possibilities are endless when it comes to wire wrapping suncatchers. Whether you’re drawn to the delicate beauty of butterflies, the whimsy of dragonflies, or the charm of your own custom bug design, these classes allow you to express your creativity.

Affordable and Fun

Everyone has different schedules and abilities, which is why my classes are designed to be flexible and accessible. Whether you have a full two hours to spare or just need a quick creative break, these fun suncatchers can be completed in under an hour.

At just $10 plus the cost of materials. I have a wide range of beads to suit every taste and budget. Choose from acrylic for the younger creative through to crystals to the more discerning artist. Suncatcher wire wrapping classes are an affordable way to explore your artistic side. Bring your own beads to personalize your creation and make it truly one-of-a-kind.

Yes – Children can do the classes.  An Adult will need to stay during the lesson to provide assistance if required, but will not be charged.   Wire is used to create these delightful creatures so very young children may find it a difficult media to work with.

Custom made jewellery is a wonderful Gift

A Special Occasion Coming Up? Weddings, Balls or other special events.

Are you looking for an exquisite gift? Let me create it for you and you won’t have to run all over town looking for it?

Have you an accumulation of beads from your travels that you would like crafted into a fabulous piece for yourself or someone special?

Would you like duplicates of chosen designs made for Bridesmaids or family members. Many bespoke or custom-made designs can be made in multiples*

Some of my existing designs can be duplicated or customised in different materials or stones to suit your requirements.  This will depend on the availability (and suitability) of the materials and the original design.

Visit the Testimonial page to read reviews from some of my previous customers, and feel free to contact me to ask any questions.

Love one of my designs, but need it customised to suit your requirements?

I can often change the clasp style.  Do you find the basic lobster style difficult to use?  I can add a toggle or magnetic clasp.  As a result, it will be easier for you to wear.

Either due to different requirements or personal likes you may want an ear-wire changed.  I can customise earrings from hook to stud or even lever-back.  Especially of interest to those without piercings, I can custom most designs to suit non-pierced ears by using clip-on or screw-on findings.

If you have allergies to some metals, ear-wires can be changed to surgical steel or niobium (which is physiologically inert and hypoallergenic)

Depending on the design of the original piece, I can at times reduce / increase existing designs if they are too large / small.

The Initial Consultation is Free!

With no obligation to commit to the custom made design.

All costs will be quoted on before you commit to the project and you will be asked to confirm your acceptance of the costs and the design in writing.

Custom designs or Commissions, and large alterations will require a 50% deposit once the design has been finalised and the quote accepted.

This deposit is refundable, less any supplies specific for your design that have been ordered.  Under some circumstances an hourly fee may be deducted for time already spent on a complex design.

Crafting of the item will not commence until the quote has been accepted and the deposit paid.  (Please keep this in mind if the design is required by a certain date).

The customised item may not be collected or posted until final payment has cleared.

What Length Necklace Should I Order

How to choose the necklace length that suits you

Names of some Standard Necklace Lengths

  • Collar – this style fits closely around the neck
  • Choker – sits around the base of the neck.
  • Princess – sits on the collarbone and is a popular length
  • Matinee – Falls below the collarbone and above the bust
  • Opera – falls below the bust
  • Rope / Lariat – Falls towards the naval.  These are the longest style with the rope not having a clasp while the lariat does.

These longer styles can be worn long as a single strand, wrapped two or even three times for a layered look or knotted.

Standard Mens Necklace Lengths

  • 18 inch (46cm) – sits at the base of the neck.
  • 20 inch (51cm) – sits at the collarbone
  • 22 inch (56cm) – sits below the collarbone
  • 24 inch (61cm) – sits above the sternum
  • Over 24 inch sits on or below the sternum

Remember this is a guide only: Account for your height and body proportions to determine the ideal length.

How to measure for a custom necklace

The fall of the mentioned lengths will be determined by your height and fullness of your neck and chest, and also the size of the beads used in the design.

Decide where you would like the necklace to sit, then take a piece of string or similar and drape it around your neck.  Bring the string together at the point on your chest you would like the necklace to sit.  Note this on the string with a marker, or by cutting it at that point.  Lay the string out flat and measure.  This is the length to request your necklace be made to.

Please remember this does not include the additional length of any pendant or tassel which you will need to be mindful of.

This easy to wear style has and has no clasp making it easy to wear and perfect for people with allergies to metals. Its length means it can just be popped over your head.

I am extremely proud to have an Australian owned and made business.  All my handcrafted beaded jewellery is designed and made in my home studio at Bibra Lake.  While you’re here have a look at the gorgeous products I currently have available in my online store.

What Size Bracelet Should You Order

How to choose the bracelet size that suits you

Are you wondering if one of my bracelets will fit you… just add your wrist size to the sizes below, depending on how you would like it to fit your wrist.  If you are concerned I can always add an extension chain and lobster clasp to the design. Contact me to discuss other options.

What size-how to measure for the perfect bracelet length guide

How to measure for your perfect bracelet size

Measure your wrist with a tape placed firmly (but not tight). If you don’t have a tape measure, you can use a piece of string or a strip of paper and once marked, lay it flat and measure with a ruler.

  • Firm fit: Add ¼” to ½” to your wrist size (approx. 6mm
    to 13mm)
  • Comfortable fit: Add ¾” to 1” to your wrist size (approx. 19mm to 25mm)
  • Loose fit: Add 1 ¼” (approx. 32mm)

For example – your wrist measures 6 inches:

  • You like a firm fitting style, add ½ inch, resulting in a bracelet length of 6.5 inches
  • You prefer a comfortable fit, add 1 inch, resulting in a bracelet length of 7 inches.
  • You opt for a loose fit, add 1 ¼ inches, resulting in a bracelet length of 7.25 inches.

What size Bracelet should you order?

Remember, if you’re unsure, adding an extension chain or an adjustable knot can provide flexibility in fit.

If you’re purchasing a bracelet as a gift and can’t measure the recipient’s wrist, you can use the average wrist sizes provided to estimate the appropriate length.

Jewellery Jargon: Findings

Findings – what does it all mean?

Findings – a word used in beadwork and jewellery making, that may sound confusing in descriptions or statements. This post will hopefully help you to understand what the items I mention actually are and how I use them in my designs.  I have other Jewellery Jargon posts and you might find clasp styles helpful.

wire guardian findings

Wire guardians, Wire protectors

Beading wire and threads can be damaged by wear and tear from clasps and other components.

Wire guardian are little horseshoe-shaped tubes through which beading wire or thread is passed. The arched section is open on one side for ease of threading. The solid sections protect the wire from wear on clasps or connectors.

French wire, Bouillon, Gimp

I may use Bullion or French wire on some designs. It provides a similar protection but is more supple and flexible. It looks like a little soft spring and is available in different size tubes.

French wire is often used to attach a clasp to pearl strands to protect the silk thread.

French wire, Bouillon, Gimp - findings
crimp beads and crimp cover bead findings

Crimp beads, Crimp covers

Crimp beads are hollow round or tubed beads which are crimped into place to secure beading wires.

The crimp covers are round beads that have an open seam and when positioned over the original crimp it is closed along its seam. This provides a neat appearance and protect delicate clothing. Squashed crimps without covers may have sharp edges that catch on clothing or scratch skin.

Charlottes, Bead-tips, Clamshell knot concealers

Beads tips, knot covers, clamshells, and calottes are names of covers used to hide crimped beads, the knots in thread and cord and some are used to finish ball chain designs.

Bead tip variations include bottom clamp with double closed loops like pictured, but also side clamp, single loop, open loop, and may be plain or decorative (ladybugs, turtles, flowers etc)

Charlottes, Bead-tips, Clamshell knot concealers

This collage shows how all these elements come together to create a neat look which protects the wire and the beads. The crimping pliers pictured have two groove sections in the jaw. The rear groove creates a “half-moon” or folds the crimp bead onto the wire (top right photo) and the front section rolls the crimp bead into shape (middle left and centre photos). The rolled crimp bead can be left in that state, or finished with a crimp cover (remainder of photos) creating a neat and protective finish.

Handcrafted Beaded Jewellery

MaxineFaye Jewellery: Handcrafted in Western Australia

The combinations of colour, texture and the “feel” of the beads inspire my original designs and as a beaded jewellery artisan I love working with colour and light,  The unique shapes and colour combinations of lamp-work and art-glass, the precision and sparkle of Swarovski crystal and the organic feel of semi-precious gemstones, freshwater pearls, and metals are all considered in my designs.

MaxineFaye Jewellery: The Evolution of a Dream

Beaded Jewellery has become an obsession

I took a beaded jewellery course at a local Recreation Centre and was hooked immediately.  I have always been crafty and have dabbled in Folk Art, Macramé, Decoupage, Lead-lighting, Woodwork and many other forms of creativity.  But being able to design and create beautiful Jewellery with the colours and stones I love is amazing.

I have been honoured with awards for my beadwork and enjoy the excitement of the challenge.  Using materials or techniques that I wouldn’t generally incorporate in my designs is a great way to stimulate the creative juices. Seeing other people enjoying and wearing my designs is very exciting and I love receiving testimonials from my happy customers.

Hints & Tips on Jewellery Care

The Environment is another passion

Much of my packaging is recycled or compostable.  Both to keep down the costs and to reduce waste. Some of my beaded jewellery designs use recycled or up-cycled materials.  This is always clearly indicated in the description of the piece.

Our house is set up as energy saving as we are able.  We use solar energy, water saving devises, an inline water filter for the whole house. LED lighting, ceiling fans for both relief in summer and to keep the heat down during winter further reduce the running costs.

The garden follows a general permaculture / no dig practice. We harvest our own avocado, citrus and other fruit and vegetables. Vegetables and herbs which benefit from shade sit under some shrubs, while the heat loving plants find their spots on the edges of the gardens.  The garden isn’t always tidy, (who am I kidding – it is seldom tidy) but the bees and butterflies (and children) seem to enjoy it.

The chooks have yet to read the “no dig” agreement though!  They help dispose of the kitchen waste and reward us with eggs, so are generally forgiven.  When they stop laying, they enjoy their retirement foraging around the back yard.  We could never eat them.

Hubby has recently set up some native beehives in the front yard.  These aren’t for honey, but to encourage them to stay in the garden to protect it from pests and to help pollinate the plants.

Family, Friends & Community

Friends, family and community are important parts of my life.  I donate Gift Vouchers, Jewellery items and Class Certificates to assist Community Groups with their fund-raising.  I attend Community events where visitors (young and young-at-heart) can make their own beaded sun-catchers.

Repair & Remodel: Existing Beaded Jewellery

Repair or Remodel your broken or damaged beaded Jewellery

I can repair broken strands by restringing.  I offer silk or silkon™ thread for Pearls and softer Gemstones as they protect the delicate beads.  Glass or Crystal beads have sharp edges and I may suggest a remodel of the design using stronger thread or beading wire may be needed.

I can tidy up an existing design if it has damaged sections. The amount of repair will depend on the amount of damage to the original design and if you want to replicate it or remodel the design.

garnet stitched necklace repair @MaxineFaye

Not all Repairs are Major

A simple change of clasp, or earring style may be all you require

Would you like to change a style of clasp.  Do you find the basic lobster style difficult to use?  By adding a toggle or magnetic clasp wearing your jewellery will be easier.

Altering earring wires due to requirements or personal preferences is an option you can choose to change earrings from hook to stud or even lever-back.  I can alter most designs to suit non-pierced ears by using clip-on or screw-on findings.  Ear wires can be changed to surgical steel or niobium (which is physiologically inert and hypoallergenic).

Repair and Remodel Fit for a Bride

A Family Heirloom to Share

The original necklace belonged to the customers Mother and held sentimental value for the family. It had been placed in an ultrasonic cleaner causing much of the nacre coating to come off the glass beads.

I rethreaded with new Pearls, cleaned, and replaced lost crystals in the clasp and added the extra strand which had been broken a long time ago.   From the salvaged beads of the original design, I made bracelets for the Bride and Flower-Girl (great-granddaughter of the original owner). It is always such an honour to be trusted with items as sentimental as this.

Pearl wedding necklace repair and remodel at MaxineFaye handcrafted beaded jewellery

To Repair or Remodel: This is the Question?

Stretch bracelets are the biggest request for repairs therefore when arranging a stretch bracelet repair, choose between the following options:

  • restrung onto stretch cord as the original design.
  • threaded onto cord or leather and finished with an adjustable slide knot.
  • threaded onto nylon coated stainless steel beading wire with a clasp added.
    • Any beads removed to make space for the clasp or adjustable knot can be remodelled into charms to add to the bracelet, a pendant, or a pair of earrings.

When removing an elastic stretch style bracelet DO NOT pull the bracelet off your wrist, but gently roll it off.  This will reduce the wear and tear on the cord and extend the life of the piece.

Tired, Outdated or Unloved Designs?

Does your existing beaded jewellery need some TLC?

Have you inherited or been gifted beaded jewellery that is just not right for you? Possibly it is too long or short for you?  Consequently, even though you love the piece you are unable to wear it.
This can be changed!  The piece was remodelled to suit the customer.

Pieces of damaged or out-dated jewellery can be given a new lease on life. I can repair or remodel them so you will be able to wear them again.

Do you want to remodel your beaded jewellery?  Do you have some wonderful ideas of what you would like, but not sure how to go about it?  Have you been making a scrapbook or Pinterest board of designs you like?  Are you ready to get that design created?

Book a Free Consultation to repair beaded jewellery

The initial consultation is both cost, and obligation free.

All costs to remodel or repair the item will be quoted on before you commit to the project. You will be asked to confirm your acceptance of the costs and the design in writing.  The repair or remodelling will not commence until the quote has been accepted and the deposit paid.

Do you have a box of bits and pieces?  Have you lost one of the earrings – did you know I can remodel it into a charm for a bracelet or even a pendant.  Sometimes I may have similar beads and be able to make something suitable.

If you need extra beads or materials for your chosen design, you can either choose from a large range of beads and findings I have available, supply your own or I can order that “certain” bead in for you.
